A FAMILY WHO LOST A CHILD

A Family Who Lost A Child tells the story of two Armenian families in Aleppo during the Armenian Genocide in 1915

Please note some people may find this project distressing.

A Family Who Lost A Child is a VR experience that tells the story of two Armenian families caught up in the events of Armenian Genocide in Aleppo in 1915. The project combines oral histories and archival research with immersive storytelling to place the audience inside an old caravanserai in Aleppo. The experience explores VR as a place where we can investigate alternative systems of knowledge, proposing embodied knowledge as a way of understanding and communicating challenging events and contested histories. A Family Who Lost A Child explores how we can understand events by inhabiting virtual spatial environments that allow us to know through feeling rather than more static forms of information. By placing the audience in the position of the witness as the scene unfolds around them, the experience aims to explore the edge of where we feel comfortable, creating a powerful but empathetic experience that audiences remember long after they leave.

The project has been exhibited at London Festival of Architecture, Brompton Cemetery Chapel & Breeze Film Festival.

A really moving & amazing story. I was quite emotional by the end. These stories are so important for humanising victims of genocide who can otherwise feel so far from us.
